Article - The emerging role of the city as a workplace

What really defines 'the world of workplace'? Today when we talk about 'workplace', we often refer to a building and review its performance in relation to the requirements of the owner of that building (either owned or leased).

However, buildings are effectively nodes of those grids that we call cities. And cities are transforming and innovating at an accelerating pace, their innovation projects being often funded by governments. So what influence do cities have on the trades of housing and FM services? Over the past two years a small group of researchers at IFMA has been working to address the definition of a 'universe of discourse' for facilities management and the workplace.

This article was written by Erik Jaspers, Head of Strategy & Innovation at Planon, and member of IFMA Foundation's Board of Trustees, and originally appeared in Work & Place in September 2014.
