Case Study - Eindhoven University

Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is a research-driven, design-oriented university in the Netherlands specializing in engineering science and technology, offering 36 study programs for more than 10,000 students. The University’s real estate department is responsible for managing all real estate, infrastructure, space, and maintenance at the central campus location in Eindhoven.

With the number of students expected to grow by 40 percent between 2015 and 2020, the TU/e created a “Campus 2020” masterplan to ensure alignment of real estate with changing needs. A targeted space reduction program to reduce floor space from 2.2 million square feet in 2006 to 1.8 million square feet in 2020 is part of that strategy.

“To combine a growing number of students with space reduction is quite a challenge,” said Edwin Spanjaards, Manager Staff Services for TU/e’s real estate department. “When we started this project, the average space and workspace utilization was at just 46 percent. Improving this was one of the ways to achieve our goal."
